THE PERFECT SHIRT FOR EVERYONE. BLOCK PRINTED USING TRADITIONAL METHODS IN BARGU, RAJASTHAN, INDIA.
The block printed Beach Shirt has proved to be a best seller at the markets in London, Barcelona the South of France and Madrid. Needless to say, the ‘heat wave’ that the cities experienced were perfectly timed as everyone was looking for lightweight cotton fabrics to clad themselves with- extra points if they were block printed! (I find that every time I go to Europe the polyester invasion of the high street becomes more apparent. Wouldn’t it be interesting to get breakdown of composition percentages per shop – or is that just me?!).
Due to small production quantities in a small Sri Lankan workshop, the block printed shirts only come in one shape and size for now. However, it is designed to be oversized, meaning that it can look good what ever your shape and size, I say this albeit deeply disliking the term one-size-fits-all. I loved seeing men and women of all ages and sizes buying these you can see some pictures here, here and here. (the second one is my grandmother, definitely have a look!)
The shirts were made in 10 different block printed fabrics, 2 of which are specially hand carved blocks of my illustration, printed in collaboration with Block Print House of Bagru. Learn about the process here. The fabric for the rest was sourced from reputable suppliers in Jaipur, still helping to promote the local craft. There was only enough of some of the fabrics to make one shirt with, meaning that they’re totally unique.
